If things were only good and bad, we’d have to judge ourselves accordingly, and we are far too complex to be reduced to something so simple. We can be good people who make bad decisions. Lord knows I have and will continue to do so, yet that’s how I learn and improve as an individual. I’m able to separate myself from my poor choices — not to absolve myself of the responsibility that comes with them, but rather to avoid tattooing a label onto my forehead based on isolated incidents. When we can do that for ourselves, then we can also do that in relation to others. That level of compassion is needed if we’re going to continue sharing this planet with our fellow humans.
