We’re either pushed by fear or pulled by love.
Either way, we’re headed in the same direction, but only love will keep us fueled for the long haul. Fear is not a sustainable motivator; it just exhausts us. That voice in me, my inner critic, found power and authority when I entered an unfamiliar and uncomfortable space. When I was lost and confused, I turned to it because it sounded like all the people I knew growing up. I don’t think I cared whether my inner critic was right—it just felt safe because that voice was so familiar. But in the end, my inner critic was exhausting me and my creative energy. When we’re scared and uncomfortable, we’re drawn to the familiar, like a moth to light—often with the same consequences.
